Through a glass, darkly

Walter Pincus, long-time reporter for The Washington Post, has a thought-provoking essay in the May/June issue of the Columbia Journalism Review. The premise of the piece, Newspaper Narcissism, which is available online, is that the problems facing newspapers today are in part the result of a pursuit of glory that led papers away from readers.

If you are a student or fan of journalism, or just a reader who cares about the daily local newspaper as an endangered species (a sensitive topic these days here in Boston), you should read the piece.
